STORIES FROM AFS ADULTS

“It feels good to do something that is needed and appreciated.”
Christian Stindt, Community Service Program, Germany to Brazil, 2001

“The AFS projects of which I am aware fill gaps in community care or assist people who would otherwise miss out on particular services. Accordingly, AFS provides value to both participant and recipient.”
Ian Walsh, Father of AFSer, Germany 2004

”...so many wonderful experiences would be arranged for us while we were in Bangkok the first week and Chiang Mai for the end of stay. We traveled together in air conditioned busses, saw the magnificent Grand Palace, traveled to a beautiful beach south of Bangkok where we stayed overnight, had time to go snorkeling, take a boat ride, and visited a refugee camp not open to tourists. My most powerful image from the whole trip is of children in the refugee camp singing ‘I’m going to America, my future waits for me.’ I’ve taken tours in Europe and this was as well done if not better than they were. We always ate in lovely restaurants, traveled comfortably. Ting always provided bottled water for us, and often added little touches like a Fourth of July celebration and a birthday cake for two participants.”
Cathie Currin, Visiting Teacher Program, USA to THA
