7/2/2007 - MLHS Class of 1957 to Ingegärd Sjöblom: ‘Välkomnande rygg’

“They were a very close knit class, and a respectful group. They had plenty of good school spirit for the Lakers, too.

“And, 50 years later, they are still that way!” Ingegärd Sjöblom, Swedish AFS (American Field Service) foreign student who attended Mt. Lake High School (MLHS) during the 1956-1957 school year, said in recent observation.

“I was fortunate to land in an American class such as this,” she added.

Ingegärd had the opportunity to make that comparison — stretching over a half century — when she visited Mt. Lake for the first time since she left in June 1957, to join with class members in celebrating their 50th class reunion over the extended Pow Wow weekend.

The main event was held Saturday, June 16, in the Mt. Lake Golf Course Clubhouse. Ingegärd would have missed the notable milestone if not for the persistence of classmate Jerry Engeman of Sioux Falls, S. D. “It took me a year-and-half to find her, but I did, and she was on hand to celebrate,” stated Engeman.

With the acceptance of the invitation, the 1957 MLHS graduating class extended a “Välkomnande rygg,” or “Welcome back” to their former foreign student.
