4/17/2009 - AFS Honduras Earth Hour

On Saturday, March 28, a group of AFS students invited by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) attended the “60 Earth Hour” event in the city of La Ceiba, Honduras. The students served as WWF volunteers throughout the event – handing out information and inviting people to switch off their lights to disparage climate change. The students also had the opportunity to go on-stage and talk about AFS and their own experiences in Honduras.

The students began their ecological journey prior to the event with a morning visit to the National Park “Pico Bonito”, located outside the city of La Ceiba and at an altitude of approximately 2,435 meters above sea-level. After a two hour walk, their efforts were rewarded by the magnificent view of the “Zacate” waterfall and its inviting crystal-clear water ponds.

The last stop during the student’s trip was “Cayos Cochinos”, the Aquatic National Park. Located 19 miles northeast of La Ceiba, the Park boasts 2 small islands and 13 small coral cays. There the students received an informative talk about Honduran coral reefs and protected species and had the opportunity to see the Pink Boa, an endemic specie of the cays.

A wonderful time was had by all – thank you to AF S Honduras for organizing such an amazing and educational trip. Find out more about AFS Honduras
