4/18/2006 - Dr. Kenan Sahin Is Awarded the 2006 Golden Door Award

For me taking AFS to what I will call the next step of being truly global force in what’s happening in bringing communities across the world together and give the people an opportunity to have this intimate experience of being side by side with members of other cultures. Kenan Sahin, 2002

Dr. Kenan E. Sahin, educator, enterpreneur and business leader will be a recipient of the 2006 Golden Door Award from the International Institute of Boston (www.iiboston.org) on April 18, 2006. The Award is named after Emma Lazarus’ poem inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty: ” I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Alex Plinio, AFS-USA President and Christine Vogel, Vice President for Strategic Development will attend the event.

Dr. Sahin came to the United States from Aydin, Turkey at 16 on AFS exchange program and was hosted in Inglewood, California in 1957-58. He served as a Member of the Board of Directors of AFS-USA. Dr. Sahin was honored for his role as a business leader and champion of the AFS Mission at the AFS-USA Gala in 2002. Dr. Sahin is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of TIAX LLC, a leading collaborative product and technology development firm. The Company is headquartered in Massachusetts.

He started and served as the president of Kenan Systems, a software company focused on applications software especially for the telecommunications industry, in 1982 with $1,000. By 1999, when it was acquired by Lucent, it had grown to nearly 1,000 people with offices in twelve countries. For the ensuing two years Dr. Sahin served as President of the Software Products Group of Lucent and also as Vice President of Software Technology at Bell Laboratories.

Dr. Sahin received his BS (1963) and PhD (1969) from MIT Sloan School. His doctoral work was on connecting an unlimited number of computing elements, which led to numerous patents and publications. He has served on the faculties of MIT, Harvard and University of Massachusetts in Amherst, receiving several teaching awards and publishing numerous articles and papers. While at MIT, he taught courses in MIS, Management Science, and Planning and Control. He serves on many boards including MIT, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, and Boston Symphony.
