6/3/2004 - Dining with Diplomats in Brazil
In January 2004, a special dinner held in Rio de Janeiro brought together several AFS hosted students, ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of foreign governments in addition to prominent Brazilian Government.
The international group of 96 youths made a stop in Brasilia as they were taking part in a 30 day bus tour organized by Belo Tours in partnership with AFS.
The following people were present at the dinner: the National Director of AFS Intercultura Brazil, Eduardo Assed; the president of the Tour Operator Belo Tours, Bernardo Gontijo; the AFS volunteers; German Ambassador and former AFSer, Uwe Kurt Kaestner; Norwegian Ambassador, Jan Lassen; the Counselor Embassy of Canada, Alain Latulippe; the First Secretary of the Finnish Embassy, Jouko Leinonen; the Cultural Advisor of Thailand, Warunee Bread-Krajang; the Switzerland Embassy Minister, Robert Steiner; the Director of Events and Promotions Department of EMBRATUR, Airton Pereira; Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Relations, Gustavo Senechal; former AFSer Ambassador Jose Antonio Marcondes de Carvalho, General Director of the Latin-American Integration Department and the Executive Secretary of the Tourism Minister, Marcio Favilla.
Eduardo Assed opened the night with a presentation and was followed by a German Ambassador and the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, who both emphasized the importance of exchange programs relating to the preparation of youth and international understanding.
The evening was permeated by an atmosphere of absolute integration. The enthusiasm of the students inspired the true spirit of the AFS to all those who were reminding them of this group. This event crowned the organization, building its credibility before influential and important guests.
Given its success, AFS Brazil intends to include it in their annual calendar.
