3/30/2009 - AFS President visits Honduras
AFS Intercultural Programs President Francisco “Tachi” Cazal visited Honduras from 28 February to 3 March where he had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the governmental, media, banking, and educational sectors of the country.
Following a packed and varied agenda prepared by AFS Honduras, which made excellent use of Tachi’s time, he met with natural parents, host families, AFS volunteers, and other special guests on 28 February in Tegucigalpa. Early the next morning Tachi, AFS Honduras Partner Director Belkis Lopez, and others traveled to the Choluteca Chapter, 95 km south of Tegucigalpa, to meet with the AFS participants and families there. At both these meetings Tachi spoke to the gathered guests and thanked the AFS Honduras volunteers for the important work that they do every day for AFS.
During his visit Tachi, accompanied by two former AFS participants, appeared on one of the top morning TV shows, Foro del Canal 8 hosted by Hector Amador. He was also interviewed by Blanca Moreno, a reporter from La Tribuna a high circulation newspaper based in the capital. The interview was published in the newspaper’s March 7th edition and may be viewed here
Tachi had the privilege of meeting with the Honduran Minister of Education, Dr. Marlon Brevé, and the President of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, Dr. Nick Rischbieth to discuss various issues ranging from the Minister’s recognition of the school year abroad to scholarships and possible future collaboration.
Before Tachi left Honduras, he attended a reception at the home of Armando and Rosa María Ayes, AFS Honduras volunteers and supporters. At the reception, Tachi thanked the Partner Director and Board of AFS Honduras for planning and executing such a successful trip. “I enjoyed having the opportunity to visit with the AFS volunteers in Honduras and to participate in meetings that promote AFS. It was a pleasure to be here again and to work with all of you here in Honduras.”
