We are bringing back a story from 1984 that has helped many people understand the sometimes confusing and difficult experience of coming home. In 1979-80, Julie Gehl from Denmark spent one year in Kenya on the AFS program.
This is one young woman’s story of her cultural confusion when she returned to Denmark after her AFS Year in Kenya, and of the journey she made back to Kenya that helped her complete her journey home.
Fascinating and powerful, Julie’s story carries us with her to Kenya as she struggles to determine how to resume her life in Denmark. Almost 20 years after she left Denmark for Kenya for the first time, Dr. Julie Gehl, and oncologist in Copenhagen, has graciously allowed us to republish her story, originally part of AFS’s “Occasional Papers in Intercultural Learning,” and provided us with her wonderful “then” (at the right) and “now” (below) photos. We also thank Bruce La Brack of the AFS Educational Advisory Council, for reminding us of this story and for providing a new forward for the republication.

But I AM Danish ?
